Wearable Tech Education – Top 10 Changes For Years To Come. There’s been a lot of hype surrounding wearables over the last three years. Smartwatches, fitness bands, and smart glasses led consumers to question what they can get out of this novel technology. For a while it looked like wearables market ‘calmed down’, 2018 shows a record number of almost 152 million wearables making their way to the users’ wrists, faces, ankles and other body parts.

As Angela McIntyre, former research director at Gartner and current Executive Director of Wearable Electronics (eWEAR) Initiative once said: “Consumers will be able to integrate the data from most wearables into a single account. Moreover, that data can be analysed using AI and cognisant computing to provide useful insights to wearers and companies alike.”

New funding initiatives from Qualcomm, Apple, Google, Samsung (S.A.M.I.), Microsoft, and Nike – many among others – build on early innovations in wearable tech, fitness, and health monitoring to create the infrastructure for merging consumer data from fashion, health, and fitness devices.




Another industry that is affected by wearables is the education. While wearables in education are not (yet) seeking to track students’ heart rates and count their number of steps, wearables in education will revolutionise the way pupil read, learn, study and engage with their professors. 1. Wearable Tech Education – Connecting Students

Systems to connect teachers to students have been taking over schools in the last few years. New platforms are designed to help with homework assignments and general school interactions. However, some school and universities have already designed special devices, built for wearable tech education. Such devices take smartphones out of the class and improve attention.

The devices work by allowing students to connect with other pupils – while in the class or out of the class if they study remotely – receive and send back questions relating to their work, and also let the teachers see replies in real time.

Moreover, teachers will be able to get in touch with students in real time, alert them to any last minute room changes, class cancellation, or if any extra tasks are needed during the class.




2. Wearable Tech Education – Facial Recognition

Facial recognition is already used in wearable tech education to save teachers time and make students feel welcome and more included. The next generations of AR Glasses will let lecturers – with hundreds of students – to recognise them, see their grades, and call them by their names.

It all happens thanks to the built-in facial recognition feature, which connects to the school database of photo ID’s to recognise the student’s face, and to the school’s grades database to provide extensive info to the teacher.

No matter if there are 20 or 2000 people in the room, teachers will always know the name of who wants to ask a question while surveying their profile, as approved by the student at the enrollment time.

3. Wearable Tech Education – Virtual Reality

Virtual reality has opened endless doors to many different industries, and also to the education. VR has changed the idea of the classroom, from the way we interact with professors, colleagues and even surf pages. A professor in Sydney, for instance, could teach the city’s architecture to students in a primary school in Germany.

Or in the case of politics students, with the help of VR, they could visit former conflict zones such as locations of the WW2, and even current ones such as Sirya in the Middle East, to see how migration is developed and its influence on the world’s politics.

4. Wearable Tech Education – Special Training

If you are a football fan, now that the World Cup 2018 is ongoing, you must remember how long it took you to perfect that special shot, until it curved out to perfection. It took practice, exercises, and sweat. Like all sports, looking at someone doing tricks is not quite the same as you do it.




Again, with the help of wearable tech education devices and platforms, coaches, doctors, professors can show new technique, new rehabilitation moves, or new lessons that help students progress faster.

Kicking a ball, rowing down the Thames, learning new yoga moves, with new wearables students will see, feel and hear what their teachers see and do. Wearables in education will help students engage body with the brain, in the comfort of their homes, to learn faster than ever.

5. Wearable Tech Education – Augmented Reality

The advent of augmented reality has created a world of endless opportunities for students. AR history books are as real as paper ones, but pictures and text are animated, interacting with the reader. As augmented reality devices are adopted in schools and universities across the world, students learn new ways of designing, creating objects, and fashion, with zero waste and zero fear of mistakes.

6. Wearable Tech Education – School Apps

Learning applications are not something new, but wearables have changed the way students use them. Apps are the foundation of any smartphone, and with the help of AI and AR, wearables will give students access to invisible information in locations where such features are needed.

For example, Streetmuseum App designed by Museum of London, lets students walk through the streets of London and see how this beautiful city looked in the past. There is an endless set of apps for education being developed to include AI and AR capabilities of modern smartphones, and embedded them with wearables for education.




7. Wearable Tech Education – Safety And Security

Using wearables in laboratories to recreate dangerous experiments and educate, will keep students safe. For example, a chemistry class in Edinburgh might witness firsthand the collision between electrons, with a real scientist from CERN transmitting data, visual and tactile to the students in the class via wearable suit and AR device.

Wearable tech education devices will also give teachers the opportunity to keep track of their students during field trips. With the help of a school wearable bracelet able to map in real-time locations and count where students are, professors can call them back or send a distress alarm signal if one of them is gone missing, pointing to their last seen location.

8. Wearable Tech Education – AI Translation Chatbots

Teachers know a lot but not everything. For that, wearables could give teachers to experts in specific fields and provide them with the option to AR or VR invite them to ‘visit’ the classroom. With minimal costs to the university, world renown experts could be asked to teach students on a wide range of topics.

For example, a class of international students in London might not know a single word of Korean language, but that will not stop Samsung’s CTO teach them about wearable technology, and how best to implement smart sensors into their fashion tech garments, in real time.

The expert speaks in Korean, the students hear in their specific languages, all with the help of Google’s AI and translation chatbots.

9. Wearable Tech Education – Indoor Navigation

As a student or even a new job starter, you might remember how difficult it was to find a new class, department or office. We’ve all got lost several times, but fear no more. A new generation of wearable tech education devices is designed in universities with the aim of helping students navigate indoor faster, save time, and work more efficiently.

For example, in a university that has put together several buildings throughout the years, confusion is inevitable. These invisible wearables connect to on-site beacons, read the students’ schedule and guide them through the corridors to get them to their classes in time.




10. Wearable Tech Education – Mixed Reality

Mixed reality and experiential learning are gaining fast ground in the academia. It is a new set of features which combines wearable devices, AI and AR technology to construct unibody suits that can provide the wearer with tactile feedback, visual input and auditive feedback.

Interesting is that cybersuits have already become popular amongst the gaming community which sees such bionic suits as very suitable to play games and engage with other users in VR worlds.

For the education, such suits are a new way of exploring unknown realms, learning about digital self, and how virtual reality changes who we perceive we are. As wearable technology evolves and new solutions are being developed, students and teachers all over will no longer face barriers when it comes to knowledge.

    Very thoughtful article and some good points raised, thanks. I am particularly interested in the experiential aspect of learning using wearables and how this could help students who are culturally and linguistically diverse. It could be that virtual reality and even augmented reality with their immersive nature could motivate and assist these students to engage more meaningfully into their school routines.
