Founded in 2012 by Marina Davis, in Auckland, New Zealand, Ovna Ovich exquisitely combines the masculinity drawn from its rich Russian heritage, with compassionate and earth-loving nature of New Zealand.
The designer label pushes the boundaries of femininity. This is beautifully portrayed in the label’s name, OVNA OVICH meaning feminine masculine.
To achieve effortless elegance, Marina creates environmentally and socially sound womenswear.
“First materials, then function, before aesthetics when designing,” says Davis
She carefully chooses natural fabrics and blends them with the rare craft of local artisans in Auckland to finally convey a highly unique image of a compassionate and strong contemporary woman.
With a background in dancing and all things performative, Davis likes to weave stories into the collections which are released as chapters.
Davis’ collections feature natural and biodegradable fibres. Her trims are chosen for their sustainable characteristics and all production is done in New Zealand.
Although Ovna Ovich label is a relatively young, it has globally been recognised for its sustainable approach to clothing. The designer has been a finalist in the Global Sustainable Fashion Award.
“Usually a thought will pop into mind that intrigues me and that I want to spend some time with. I then base the theme of the collection around that, which informs the palette, forms, and setting,” says Davis.
“My aim is to layer a meaning underneath the work and to also weave in references to the current times.“
