Martin Appelt is a German-based high-end designer couture label founded by the designer with the same name. Martin Appelt’s first collection, the AW19 was titled ‘MACHO‘ and was showcased with great success at both Paris and Krakow Fashion Week.
MACHO exercised the topic of sustainability and received a lot of media attention. It was the collection that has somehow unveiled to the general public designer’s creative spirit and unique designs and established the necessary framework for a followup for ‘GOLDDIGGER‘ Martin Appelt SS20 collection shown at Milan Fashion Week.
“Tension develops by deconstructing classic shapes, which then, get infused with lust,” explains the designer. “It is the fusion of the different design approaches and the contrary influences in my upbringing,” continues Martin Appelt.
Narrated by the fashion critics as a “joyfully ironic collection”, Martin’s second collection for the Spring Summer 2020 – suggestively called the ‘GOLDDIGGER’ – has received extensive media appreciation for designer’s smart take and clever play on luxury fashion symbols.
To critics, Martin Appelt’s ironic take on the ever so popular LV Neverfull bag and Chanel’s 2.55 classic flap purse, were unexpected statements of conscious opulence and rebellion against the wasteful boomer generation. However, to the general public, Martin’s dresses were more than playful interpretations but genuinely gorgeous eco-friendly dresses made from apple leather.
Martin grew up in Germany, where he learned the classic concepts of Haute Couture from his grandmother, who worked as a seamstress. The early influence is observed in Martin Appelt’s playful, bold, and joyfully ironic designs.
Creations strongly influenced by a blend of pop-culture and current socio-environmental issues, place the label at the epitome of experimental couture, designed to enhances the silhouette of the body and create a bold and empowered look.
Moreover, designer’s love for dramatic and extroverted fashion came from the American pop-culture and TV shows such as ‘The Nanny’, which is to this day one of his biggest inspirations.
“I don’t want to take myself too seriously. To me, humour is the most important thing, that’s why I combine class with trash, always placing the customer at the centre of attention.”
Each Martin Appelt collection reflects on a personal topic, which resonates with the designer’s life at the moment of the designing process.
“To me, fashion designing is like a therapy, and that’s why each collection I put out there is personal and unique.”
By blending unconventional shapes, symbolic elements, and original prints – referring to the entrenched pop-culture with eco-friendly and animal-free materials, Martin Appelt creations confer not only a unique look but the guarantee to stand out with every occasion.
As an innovative designer label of German origin, Martin Appelt’s dynamic heritage is beautifully highlighted in designer’s unmatched attention to detail, high-quality manufacturing methods, and elaborate production techniques.
Moreover, with sustainability in its DNA, the brand has embarked on a conscious fashion journey right from the start. Through its choice of luxurious ‘apple skin’ over the leather of animal origin, the designer makes a clear statement of understanding and respect towards consumers’ growing demand for sustainable fashion.
Apple skins are dried, shredded and processed into a thin layer that looks and feels like leather. However, when compared to animal leather, this material is breathable and recyclable, making Martin Appelt collection not only vegan but also environmentally conscious at the same time.
“My aim is to combine unique, high-end sustainable fabrics with meaningful designs and innovative ideas to create a new type of experimental fashion and collections that guarantee to stand out at every occasion,” concluded Martin Appelt.
