This spider silk ski jacket is made from innovative materials for a more sustainable apparel industry. To date, most sports apparel is manufactured with synthetic polymers such as polyester or nylon which are produced from petroleum.

It is not only that the production of such materials consumes extensive amounts of resources, water and energy but it also produces massive amounts of greenhouse gases.

Moreover, with the growing threat of the global reserve of fossil fuels running out, the apparel industry has to shift from non-renewable to sustainable resources right now.

Spider Silk Ski Jacket – Synthetic Protein

Spiber Inc. is one of the most innovative companies combining joint research in chemistry, biology, and nanotech to produce ‘Q/QMONOS’ synthetic spider silk on a commercial scale.

In fact, ‘Q/QMONOS’ is made from a synthetic protein based on fibroin extracted via microbial fermentation and proprietary spinning processes, unlike the classic fibres made from petrochemicals.

“We see proteins as a completely new class of materials. For 3.8 billion years, the appearance of new proteins has driven life on earth to evolve into a surprisingly diverse range of species. We are focusing our efforts on studying proteins in order to master them for use as industrial materials.”

Spiber’s innovative material balances high functionality with environmental friendliness and already has the capabilities of being produced on large, commercially available scales.

The material’s first case use came from Goldwin, Japanese ski apparel and lifestyle premium label, in the production of its most innovative and sustainable ski jacket to date.

I wonder what are the advantages of the material? Is it lighter and stronger? Or cheaper? Or can people tell what kind of material my jacket is made of? Simply put, why should I buy it?
