Also, 100 million people use a leading fitness app on their smartphones, compared to only 20 million in Europe for the same fitness app. The number of marathons jumped from 22 in 2011 to 330 in 2016 and also in 2016 China boasted over 650 ski resorts, doubling their 2011. The Chinese government also aims to launch 70,000 football pitches by 2020.
All these pro fitness initiatives are boosted by the upcoming Winter Olympics 2022 in Beijing which is going to be the first city to host both the summer and winter events.
The Chinese sportswear market is being given a second wind following the hype of Beijing 2008 when leading sportswear brands added almost 1,000 points-of-sale each year between 2007 and 2011!
2022 Beijing Winter Olympics – Functional Fashion
According to investment bank CLSA – the government’s plans alone to increase winter sports participation will ensure the sustainable growth of the smart clothing and functional apparel industry for many years to come.
Such plans include increasing the number of Chinese engaging in winter sports, from10 million to 300 million by 2022. As well as the development of new 800 ski resorts and 650 skating rinks across the country by the time the Olympic flame arrives, in four years time.
These combined initiatives are driving support for functional fabrics suppliers from China, such as 361°, Anta Sports and Li-Ning as well as overseas labels like Adidas, Nike, Puma, Columbia Sportswear, Fila and Patagonia.
2022 Beijing Winter Olympics – Textile Industry Takes Note
“We expect the demand for functional fabrics to grow thanks to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. As Chinese consumers are more willing to spend money on sportswear, functional materials have become the top purchasing item for sportswear brands,” explains President of the Taiwan Textile Federation.
The number of Chinese looking to engage in the winter sports alone – 300 million by 2022 – has captured the attention of functional apparel manufacturers developing in this market. As modern consumers expect their clothes to exhibit extra functionality, beyond the ability to keep them warm or cool, such as stain and dirt resistance, UV protection, battery charging materials, a new era of smart fashion and ‘fashion-tech’ is coming.
