The Path Towards Sustainable Fashion – Duality Of Perspectives

Following reports suggesting that the development of textiles in fashion is the second largest source of pollution on the planet, there are two main intertwined perspectives seeking to address the negative environmental impact of the fashion industry. The first approach focuses on buyers’ consumption patterns, suggesting second-hand purchases, slow fashion designs initiatives, and even collaborative consumption methods as a potential solution to the problem.

There is no doubt that a slight positive change in the worlds’ consumption habits would create a massive improvement in the fashion industry’s environmental performance. However, consumers face cognitive and situational barriers when it comes to pro-environmental behaviours, making education and long-term systematic programmes a requirement for this approach.

Until then, there is a second perspective which emphasises the role of innovation to create sustainable products. As such, new consumption patterns would appear, in harmony with the development of sustainable textiles, low-carbon production methods, zero-waste designs, in connection with the concept of circular fashion.

In this view, science, and technology join forces to deliver a new generation of high-quality fashion products with low or no environmental impact.

The Path Towards Sustainable Fashion – A New Innovation

On April 16th, in another step towards sustainable fashion, Bolt Threads partnered with Ecovative, a biomaterials company, to introduce another innovative material to the world; Mylo is the first leather alternative grown from mycelium, the root structure of a mushroom.

Thanks to the environment and process through which Mylo is grown, the final product looks and feels like hand-crafted leather. Moreover, as the mushroom leather’s properties such as durability, strength, and suppleness, can also be controlled, the final product is always unique. The company has promised to bring Mylo to mass consumers by releasing their own bag for pre-order this summer.
