Made To Be Remade – Adidas Futurecraft.Loop Sustainable Trainers

Adidas Futurecraft.Loop sustainable trainers. The waste generated by the apparel industry in general and the footwear segment, in particular, is shocking. Each year billions of shoes are produced and eventually end in the landfills. The UK alone discards over 300 million pairs of running shoes each year.

That’s why Adidas has been working on an innovative technology which allows them the grounding of the sneaker into pellets that can be used and reused to create new sneakers. This is how the world’s first 100% recyclable sneaker, Futurecraft.Loop was born. A sneaker made to be remade.

Also, the sneakers are off-white because Adidas team decided not to use any brightening chemicals and preserve it’s 100% sustainability image.

Futurecraft.Loop Adidas sustainable trainer is made of just one fully recyclable material, a version of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), out of the usual 12 different materials used in previous sneakers.

Tanya Sahanga, a material engineer from Adidas’s Futurecraft team, began experimenting with 3D printing of plastic hauled from the ocean into sneakers.

First, she produced Boost foam in collaboration with BASF, a German manufacturer of chemicals. Boost is composed of 2,500 elastic TPU beads pressed into a mould for the unmistakeable rice cake look on the midsole.

“The upper of Loop is made from the same material, said Sahanga. However, while the TPU can be manipulated into a midsole with ease, turning it into a thread for the uppers is far more challenging, she added.”

Adidas is not alone in this race for sustainability. Nike has its own recycling scheme called Grind.

Just that in comparison to Adidas, Nike takes in shoes from any manufacturers but uses the resulting material to make flooring, for playgrounds, indoor basketball courts, and football pitches.

Adidas anticipates a commercial run of its fully sustainable sneakers by the end of 2020.
